Joga Bonito: FIFA World Cup Council
Description
Football, or soccer, is undeniably one of the most beloved sports worldwide and has the power to unite, and divide, people and nations. This is especially true when discussing the World Cup, a global spectacle where FIFA (the Fédération Internationale de Football Association) has a long history of corruption and controversy regarding the nations hosting the Cup. This was evident with the last three host nations: Qatar and Russia have a notable history of human rights abuses, while Brazil experienced mass social unrest due to the government’s investment in the World Cup than social welfare. In this committee, delegates will represent different nations in the FIFA World Cup Council to tackle the socio-cultural issues at play within FIFA when bringing soccer to the global stage to make the World Cup an ethical, sustainable force for good.
